World Breastfeeding Week is commemorated every year from 1 to 7 August. Its main purpose is to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies worldwide. For the 2016 World Breastfeeding Week, LINC partnered with the Limpopo Department of Health to celebrate breastfeeding as the best way to provide infants with the nutrients they need and encourage bonding. LINC and the Department adopted the WHO stance to “Support mums to breastfeed anytime, anywhere”. A delegation from the Department and LINC, led by the MEC and HOD of the Department of Health and other Senior Officials, marched through the Polokwane CBD chanting songs about the benefits of breastfeeding. One of the busiest malls in Polokwane, Limpopo Mall, situated near the main taxi and bus rank, was used as an example of an establishment which allowed mums to breastfeed in public. The delegation that walked through the mall came across one mum breastfeeding her baby whilst seated in a public area inside the mall. The MEC praised the mum for breastfeeding her baby and used her to encourage all patrons present to breastfeed and spread the message in their families, communities and places of work. BREAST IS BEST!
