The Limpopo Department of Health Provincial Anaesthesiologist, Dr Tsakani Mhlari, was awarded two grants by the Discovery Foundation to improve anaesthetic care, with a specific focus on maternal care, in Limpopo. Dr Mhlari, the District Clinical Specialist Team Anaesthesiologist for Capricorn District and the anaesthesiology team in the Polokwane/Mankweng Hospital Complex have employed innovative methods to address sub-optimal anaesthetic care in the province’s district and regional hospitals. One of the approaches has been to train and mentor doctors from district and regional hospitals towards a Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA). The 2017/2018 candidates have once again done the province proud with a 100% pass rate. We salute the dedication, passion and non-conventional approaches adopted by Dr Mhlari and her team to attract DA candidates, and mentor and support them from beginning to end. The consistent 100% pass rate bears testament to the success of the initiative. We also wish to acknowledge the support of the Discovery Foundation.
